The Columbia, Missouri chapter of the Audubon Society — serving Audrain, Boone, Cooper, Howard, Monroe & Randolph Counties

Columbia Audubon Society board minutes: November 18, 2015

Present: Kris Hagglund, Lori Hagglund, Laura Hillman, Bill Mees, Allison Vaughn, Eric Seaman, Eric Reuter, Doug Miller, Alice Robinson, Carolyn Terry, Lori Turner.

Kris began the meeting discussing the upcoming CoMo Gives fund raiser to be held during the month of December. CAS is in it for the first time. Bill drafted a letter that members could send to friends, co-workers, etc. Email Bill with suggestions or changes . Kris also drafted a letter that will go to members to encourage them to participate. Bill shared marketing ideas - a postcard size sheet that could be given out with a purchase at Songbird Station; a shorter version would be on Facebook. Eric R. offered to donate bird feeders that he had made for thank you gifts with a donation. It was decided that that would compete with Songbird Station, our sponsor.

Eric S. gave a brief treasurer’s report. The large investments have begun to rebound. That annual report to National Audubon is due November 30.

No update of the bird feeder/seed program for Harrisburg schools.

Allison reported that an application has been sent to Lucky’s Market to participate in the Wooden Nickel program. If accepted CAS would have a six week block of time.

The park tax extension passed in the recent city election. CAS had run a nice ad in the Tribune right before the vote to support the measure.

Volunteers needed for a taping session for Columbia Access TV on December 1. Bill and Allison volunteered to talk about CAS.

Tetons Summer Program - The allocated money for 2015 was not used. The money will be added to the 2016 allocation to help send 4 students or let the schools decide how it will be divided among the students in need.

A Boy Scout, Sammy Fieser, has built an information kiosk for CANS. It has been installed at the start of the trails at the edge of the woods. Give ideas to Bill on how to use it. He will also give credit to those individuals who donated expertise or materials to construct the parking lot.

Laura Hillman will be working on nominations for board positions for next year.

Whitney Adams, a 6th grade teacher at Lee Elementary school, is the recipient of the Hog Island scholarship for Summer 2016.

Bill reported on the prairie restoration project. John has recommended to about $7,000 will need to be spent to purchase seed. The MoBCI grant and some of the donation for the restoration will be used for that purpose. CAS recorded over 300 hours in seed collection time. The seeding will be done shortly.

Doug reported that we still need about 20 more paid members to reach the previous level of membership.

Lori T. has the field trips planned through January.

Eric R. reported that the maps for the CBC are almost complete.

Respectfully submitted, Alice Robinson

There were 23 in attendance at the general meeting. Kris gave updates on the CoMo Gives program, the Harrisburg feeder program, Lucky’s Market application for the Wooden Nickel program, the new CANS kiosk, Hog Island awardee, and CBC December 19. Sarah Kendrick gave a presentation on her research with the Eastern Wood-pewee and an update on the Great Missouri Bird Trail.
