Columbia Audubon Society board meeting October 15, 2014

Present: Kris Hagglund, Lori Hagglund, Allison Vaughn, Doug Miller, Lottie Bushmann, Bill Mees, Eric Seaman, John Besser, Alice Robinson, Laura Hillman, and Carolyn Terry.

Kris began the meeting with comments about the successful Band With Nature for second graders. Two days had to be cancelled due to inclement weather. Members have collected seed for the prairie restoration several times.

The minutes from the September meeting were reviewed, typo corrections made. Bill moved we accept, Doug 2nd. Passed

Treasurer's report was given by Eric. No changes suggested.

Allison gave an update about the MoBCI grant application for the prairie restoration project at CANS. The sub-committee and steering committee will be looking at them the end of October with decisions made November 1. She felt that CAS will probably get the grant with a possibility of getting even more funds.

Doug shared the final draft for business cards with CAS information on it that we could hand to people we come in contact with that might be interested in joining CASl. He will have 1,000 printed.

Kris will check with Edge about ideas for spending the memorial money given for Jerry.

Laura reported that one and possibly 2 group leaders are needed for the Christmas Bird Count. She will announce to the general meeting tonight. Lori H. and Jan will be in charge of the chili supper to follow the count.

Kris led a discussion about goal setting for the coming year. The 3 to target were:

  • Target new younger members.
  • Development, fund raising.
  • Prairie restoration project at CANS.

The nature school at Rock Bridge State Park and a nature center at Bonnie View were 2 others to be considered in the future. Kris will have Joe Swanigan come to the next board meeting to talk about the fund raising.

Kris and Bill will consult with Mike Griggs of Parks and Rec. to voice our support for a nature center and ascertain the plans for Bonnie View with new sales tax money. Also need evidence of their support of the prairie restoration project since some of it is Parks and Rec. property.

Eric Reuter is the new chat editor. Deadline for the next Chat is due October 25. It was decided not to have advertising in the Chat at this time but will continue to mention Songbird Station, our corporate sponsor.

The education sub-committee will meet soon.

John reported that they will do a burn at Wild Haven before Christmas. There have been several seed collecting sessions.

Allison reported that you can't retract announcements from the Vox so will choose more carefully what goes into that.

Doug will have the business cards for members next month. We should encourage national members to join the local too. A good way to involve others would be with our projects which are listed on the web site. Each of us needs to think of ways to encourage increased membership.

Kris reported for Lori T. on several recent field trips. They have been well attended. Rocky Top Trail trip will be this Saturday.

Allison Vaughn gave an interesting presentation to the general meeting on the Missouri Glade Distribution Inventory and what bird species each supports.
