Board meeting of Columbia Audubon Society, April 18, 2012

Present: Howard Hinkel, Bill Mees, Julie Fisher, Eric Seaman, Allison Vaughn, Doug Miller, Alice Robinson, Edge Wade, Bonnie Heidy, John Besser, Jan Mees, Lottie Bushman

The minutes from the March 21, 2012 meeting were approved after corrections with Edge moving and Bonnie 2nd.

The budget for the next fiscal year was discussed. Bill suggested we add $2,000 for the 2nd grade CPS educational event to be held in the fall of 2012 and spring of 2013. He also suggested using interest from the Jeffery’s CD for education before drawing from general fund. John objected using any from the principle. John had the lawn mower serviced so suggested we add another $200 in maintenance. Allison suggested we purchase equipment for burns so we wouldn’t have to depend on others. Fire equipment would be about $680. Budget tabled.

Allison continues to work placing fliers is strategic places for the public such as the library.

Bonnie is now mailing 39 Chats and is having problems with copying. Needs someone to replace her but she will continue through this fiscal year.

Nature areas – Field trip scheduled for May 5.

CANS – City rejected parking lot plans ("need" 186 spaces for property size) Engineer will resubmit. Clean-up will be Saturday with city. Master Gardeners have been notified as well as Girl Scouts.

Lottie (education) Becky Elden will be attending Hog Island under CAS scholarship and Lottie will be going as a volunteer. Bill suggested they give a program next year.

Membership – Doug reported that $600 in dues had recently come in.

Allison still working on getting the Migration Bird Count entered in a data base.

Julie has sent 4 letters to solicit sponsorship but hasn’t heard back from any.

Field Trips – Edge reported that one trip had to be cancelled due to weather. ASM in Joplin this week end. Rob Cahill will be touring CANS at 8am April 25. Grant School Field trip May 2 at Rock Bridge State Park. Several volunteered to help. Wildhaven field trip May 5, Song Bird trip May 5 @ Rock Bridge and also a CAS trip there on May 14

The annual picnic will be held at Wildhaven May 16. Edge suggested we offer tour, birding, etc. to attract more members to come. There will be an email reminder about the picnic with directions, what to bring, etc.

A special board meeting will be called to discuss where to put the gifted money to CAS and also about obtaining liability insurance for the board.

General CAS meeting – 29 present.

Edge, the ASM conservation coordinator, shared her experiences with CACHE and SPARKS and the importance of the data collected.

Business meeting The nominations for vacancies were presented: President - Bill Mees, Treasurer - Eric Seaman, Board member – Lori Hagglund. Voting by secret ballot. (all elected unanimously)
