Purple Martin Seminar
Presented by: Songbird Station
Location: Songbird Station. 2010 Chapel Plaza Ct #C, Columbia, MO

They're back!  With Purple Martins arriving back from their long migration in Brazil, it is time to revisit ways to attract and maintain our purple-feathered friends.  Join us at Songbird Station on Sunday, February 26th at 2:00 PM as Birdman Mel shares tips on housing and attracting Purple Martins to your yard.

What makes the Purple Martin a backyard favorite?  While they have a beautiful morning and daylong song and graceful soaring flight, Purple Martins are also loved for their appetites!  Martins often dine on flies, dragonflies, mosquitoes, and other backyard pests which we prefer to not share our backyards with.

For more details on the seminar, call the store at 800-256-2473 or email Holly@songbirdstation.com. Reservations for the Purple Martin Seminar are encouraged but not required.  Informational handouts and refreshments will be provided.

Birding Beyond the Backyard: Basic and Intermediate Field Techniques
Presented by: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
Location: Stephens Lake Activity Center. 2311 E. Walnut St, Columbia, MO

Our four April sessions (2.5 hours each) will be divided between classroom and field experience.  In the classroom, we’ll explore resources and tools available to birders; outdoors, in nearby Stephens Park, we will put those resources and tools to use to improve birding skills as we seek resident and migrating birds.

Indoors, hands-on exercises are aimed toward getting the full value from bird field guides as we get to know the new National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, Sixth Edition.  We’ll practice using additional printed materials, and discuss the value and appropriate use of electronic birding tools.  The American Birding Association’s Code of Birding Ethics will be distributed, discussed, and adhered to.

Species of special focus for the course will be our central Missouri resident birds and the migrating wood warblers, vireos and thrushes.  We’ll learn what to look for when, where and how, as we begin the peak [peek?]
